Less than 2 weeks to go and already the 2011-2012 Winter list stands at 130 species

The MiroisEont list has 117 species as of February 16.  Please see the complete list at this link and click on semaine 11:

A MiroisEont member, me, found a Mute Swan on February 19 in Summerstown for a new total of 118 species; all these 118 species were observed by a at least one MiroisEont member.

The following 11 additional species have been seen by others (but not by a MiroisEont member):

Greater White-fronted Goose, Ross's Goose, Redhead, Ruddy Duck, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Eastern Phoebe, Great Egret, Red-throated Loon, Winter Wren, Red-shouldered Hawk, Eastern Meadowlark and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.  Have I missed any??

Last winter we had a total of  110 species within our birding circle. So far this winter we have a grand total of 130 species!! WOW!!

Final Winter List stands at 110 species!! Well done folks!!

In addition to the 103 species recorded by MiroisEont members we can add the following 7 species:

1-AndrĂ©e Dubois confirmed the SNOWY OWL in the circle this morning (Feb. 24). She saw it flying north from Chemin Sainte Julie (northwest of St-Clet) towards Sainte-Marthe in the pre-dawn light.(Lance Laviolette)

2-A NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in Cornwall yesterday.

New winter birds push total to 107 SPECIES

In addition to the 100 species seen this winter by MiroisEont members are the following species recorded below in earlier posts: Short-eared Owl, Fox Sparrow, Iceland Gull, R-n Pheasant and Saw-whet Owl for a new total of 105 species.

Now we can also add the Long-tailed Ducks identified by Christine Trudeau and other birders at the Cornwall Power Dam Visitor Centre on Saturday February 5 and the Black-backed Woodpeckers (male seen by Giovanni Pari at Mer Bleue Feb 3 and a female seen by Jonathan France on February 6 at about 100 yds on the east side of Hwy 34 where the trail crosses the road by RComm north of Vankleek Hill.

Peregrine Falcon, species # 103 for the winter in our birding circle.

Hans v d Z saw 2 Peregrine Falcons on Barnhart Island Road on January 6.  This area is located in the Robert Moses State (NY) Park across the St. Lawrence River opposite Guindon Park.

Red-bellied Woodpecker # 101 and Common Grackle # 102

I saw the woodpecker yesterday on Greenlane road (merci Jean-Jacques et Pat).

Ann and Jacques Rochon saw the grackle yesterday at same place where the cowbirds were seen recently. Please see post below for directions.

Brown-headed Cowbird becomes species # 100 in our birding circle this winter



Two B-h COWBIRDS were observed by Christine Trudeau on January 3 at a feeder on Calypso Rd near Bertrand Rd near Larose Forest. Under mail box, in front of residence is a yellow sign with the picture of a turkey. Cowbirds can be and should be observed from the road ONLY. Thanks!

N. Saw Whet Owl # 98 Merlin # 99 on 2010-2011 winter bird list

Merlin seen this morning by Ann and Jacques Rochon on Green Lane road in Hawkesbury.

The owl was reported by Frances Fraser sometime this December in Dunvegan.  Do you have the date Frances?
